Back Muscle Pain May Be Caused By Underused Muscles

December 4th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

There are numerous causes for back muscle pain and sometimes the worst pain does not involve the worst conditions. Anything from a simple sprain to a herniated disk can be uncomfortable with muscle spasm in the lower back often presenting pain so severe the sufferers cannot walk or stand up straight. In other cases of people with a disk out of place or even those with degenerative spine disease may feel little or no pain.

Muscle strength and flexibility are important to reducing the incidences of back muscle pain and regular exercise can keep them from becoming stiff. It is this stiffness, when movements are made out of the ordinary that causes back muscle pain. By understand how the muscles work in the back and what needs to be done to prevent injury, can help make them strong enough to avoid pain.

The extensor muscles are attached to the back of the spine and help in standing straight along with lifting. The flexor muscles, attached to the front of the spine, aid in bending, lifting and in arching the back. The oblique muscles on the side of the spine help with rotation and having correct posture. If any one of these muscles is stressed or pulled due to wrong movements, will cause back muscle pain and potentially, subsequent muscle spasms.

Lack Of Support Blamed For Back Pain

Unless properly conditioned, these muscle groups will grow weak with age and lack of use and intense therapy may be needed to end back muscle pain. By working the muscles properly on a consistent basis, they can be strengthened, helping the spine remain straight and pain free. When a person suffers from back pain, the usual reaction is to not use the muscles, since it hurts. This will cause them to weaken and be unable to support the spine in a neutral position.

Additionally, back muscle pain lasting more than two weeks and not using them can lead to muscle atrophy, or stiffening, which will result in muscle weakening causing more pain to other muscles that have to work harder to maintain the spine in an upright position. Stress can also lead to back pain as when a person is under stress, the back muscles usually tighten, using strength usually used to uphold the spine causing other muscles to work harder.

While the first few days of a back spasm are usually the worst, the pain will subside in a few days. Muscle relaxers may be prescribed to help ease the pain, but one the spasm relaxes, the muscles need to be slowly worked to rebuild their strength to reduce the chance of returning back muscle pain.

November 29th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

You and your spouse have been married for years, and time is now taking its toll on your spouse in the form of back pain. However, rather than do anything about it, your spouse has used it as an excuse not to help around the house, preferring instead to sit and watch television. So, you need ideas on how to deal with your spouse and your spouse’s chronic back pain.

About Chronic Back Pain

Is your spouse the kind of person who used to be active in their youth? If so, chances are that they would be active without properly warming up first. It might seem silly to do that every time before a walk or whatever activity that is to be planned, but it can make all the difference later on, especially when it comes to back pain.

The next thing that you need to consider is how up to date your spouse is on their medical examinations. Sometimes chronic back pain is caused by an underlying medical condition that should be checked. If you suspect this is the case, be sure to confront your spouse and tell your spouse that they had better go see a doctor if they want to get rid of that chronic back pain.

Really, it all has to do with the situation when it comes to figuring out how to deal with your spouse. Is your spouse the kind of person who is very independent and cannot be given advice? Or, is your spouse just the kind of person who sits complaining because your spouse does not know what to do about the back pain?

If your spouse is in the first category, you really cannot do anything but give your spouse some space and let them make their own conclusions about the back pain. If your spouse is in the second category, you might be able to convince them that some ways to alleviate the back pain can actually be fun ones.

For example, you could make a romantic getaway out of it and make reservations at a couples spa. There, you two can get massages, and relax in the Jacuzzi, both of which can be very beneficial for back pain.

If you would like more information on how to help your spouse with chronic back pain, ask your doctor for advice. You can also search the internet on various reputable health websites. You are sure to find effective remedies with the proper research.

Unusual Movement May Cause Back Pain After Knee Surgery

November 25th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Many persons anticipating knee surgery often look forward to their life getting back to normal once the knee surgery has healed and for the most part they can look forward to going about their business. However, experiencing back pain after knee surgery may also be expected as part of the recovery process. While there may be some problems with slight back pain after knee surgery caused by epidural anesthesia, the location of the needle entry will stop hurting after a few days.

When a person is released from the hospital following knee surgery, they will be using crutches or a walker, which will put back muscles to work that may not be used to functioning in the way in which they are being used. It is not unusual for a person to favor the side on which the surgery was performed, which places additional stress on back muscles. This can contribute to back pain after knee surgery and by exercising the back properly can help the pain dissipate.

Some surgeons recommend back muscles exercises prior to surgery to help reduce the amount of back pain after knee surgery, as the muscle strength is increased and better able to handle the additional, unusual movements.

Crutches Keeps Pressure Off Knee And On Back

With most knee surgeries, the exercises to help rebuild the leg muscles, places an undue burden on the back muscles as well as unintended leaning occurs when using crutches. After a period of recovery, switching to using just one crutch often exaggerates the back pain after knee surgery, especially on the side opposite of the knee surgery.

It is important that while laying in bed, exercises be used to keep the overall back muscles strong and pain free. Expecting back pain after knee surgery can make its appearance less of a shock and more of a reminder that additional exercising of those muscles may be needed. Changing sleeping positions may help.

Even if the knee surgery requires to keep the leg elevated for the first few days, or week, sleeping on a firmer mattress with no pillow or a flatter pillow will help keep the head in alignment with the rest of the spine, which can alleviate some of the back pain after knee surgery. Sleeping on one side or the other, without the benefit of support for the head, will generally cause a stiffness in the neck muscles, which will also increase the back pain.

People end up on the operating table for a number of different reasons, and because of this there are thousands of people dealing with pain after shoulder surgery, including back pain, on a daily basis. This back pain that’s experienced after having surgery can be due to a couple of different things, depending on what the surgery was for in the first place.

However, the biggest reason someone would experience back pain after shoulder surgery is because they had surgery in the first place to cure chronic back pain. It doesn’t seem logical to have back pain after shoulder surgery since that’s was the surgery was supposed to cease, but in most cases there is a certain amount of healing time to be had before the person having the surgery starts to feel relief.

If back pain after shoulder surgery is something you or someone you know is going through, there are a few things you can do to relieve the pain until you start to see results from the surgery itself.

Top Three Tip for Relief

Tip #1

The first thing to do when trying to relieve back pain after shoulder surgery is to apply cold compresses to the most painful area. You should not leave cold compresses on too long, no more than 10 minutes should do the trick. This method isn’t designed to take all of the pain away, but to help numb your tender muscles while they relax into some relief.

If cold compresses don’t work, hot compresses can be used but the relief from your back pain won’t be as substantial or last as long as if you were using a cold compress.

Tip #2

Use a topical solution like icyhot upon back pain after your shoulder surgery to further eliminate residual pain you may have. This method can be done after using a cold compress, which is a great idea for a before bedtime routine. Using both methods before going to sleep will allow you a more restful period, further allowing the muscles in your back to heal after surgery.

Tip #3

Streching, walking and light yoga exercises will work wonders for your back pain shoulder after surgery. It doesn’t matter the way you choose to do it, but lightly stretching your back muscles on a daily basis, preferably at least twice per day, you will greatly reduce the amount of time it takes for your back to heal after surgery, and you begin to feel permanent relief as a result.
