Dealing with Back Pain after shoulder Surgery

People end up on the operating table for a number of different reasons, and because of this there are thousands of people dealing with pain after shoulder surgery, including back pain, on a daily basis. This back pain that’s experienced after having surgery can be due to a couple of different things, depending on what the surgery was for in the first place.

However, the biggest reason someone would experience back pain after shoulder surgery is because they had surgery in the first place to cure chronic back pain. Tip #1

The first thing to do when trying to relieve back pain after shoulder surgery is to apply cold compresses to the most painful area. You should not leave cold compresses on too long, no more than 10 minutes should do the trick. This method isn’t designed to take all of the pain away, but to help numb your tender muscles while they relax into some relief.

If cold compresses don’t work, hot compresses can be used but the relief from your back pain won’t be as substantial or last as long as if you were using a cold compress.

It doesn’t matter the way you choose to do it, but lightly stretching your back muscles on a daily basis, preferably at least twice per day, you will greatly reduce the amount of time it takes for your back to heal after surgery, and you begin to feel permanent relief as a result.

You’ve just had back surgery and you are still experiencing pain. What should you do? The first thing you should do is talk to your doctor who may be able to prescribe some form of medication to help relieve the pain you’re experiencing. There are also a few things you can do at home to help relieve that pain. However, before you try anything, make sure you discuss the techniques with your doctor to make sure you aren’t doing more damage than good. When you are recovering from surgery, you want to make sure you are allowing yourself to heal properly and you don’t want to do anything that will exacerbate the problem.

Laying On A Small Pillow

One of the remedies to relieve back pain after surgery that you can try at home is to lay on your back with a soft pillow under your knees. Keep your knees bent and your back straight. This will keep the pressure off your back in order to relieve the pain and to allow your back to heal. You can also try resting your knees on a pillow that’s placed on a chair. Lay on your back and place your knees on the chair. Both of these are great remedies to relieve back pain after surgery.

Use A Small Step Stool

Another remedy you can try is to stand with one foot on a small stool. Alternate your feet every five to fifteen minutes while keeping your back straight and your head and hips aligned. This remedy to relieve back pain after surgery keeps the pressure off your lower back and will help you if you have to stand for long periods of time.

Heating Pads

You can also try a heating pad. Many people use heating pads as remedies to relieve back pain after surgery. Try a heating pad placed on your back at the source of the pain for twenty or thirty minutes. You can also try an ice pack or a light massage given by someone else. Just make sure that you aren’t experiencing more pain than you were before. If your back pain gets worse, you should refrain from using that remedy and you should search for another, more effective, technique.

These are just a few remedies to relieve back pain after surgery. Your doctor may have more, so you should ask him or her what you should do when the pain becomes unbearable. You should also contact your doctor if you are experiencing numbness, nausea, vomiting, fever, or anything else that causes you alarm. Surgery For Back Pain Should Be Your Last Recourse

Other than a surgical emergency condition, surgery for back pain is usually the last option available to you for finding relief from back pain. It may be suggested by your physician who would recommend such a course of action only when the pain you are feeling is considerable even in spite of non-surgical treatments being used and no relief resulting. It can also be recommended when the cause of your back pain is such that only surgery for back pain can help you get relief.

Proven Herniated Disc

There are certain instances in which surgery for back pain is recommended and one of them is having a proven herniated disc which is causing you quite some pain. To treat your herniated disc would require decompression of the nerve in your back that is causing you pain, and this may require a surgical operation to achieve.

There are other reasons why you would require surgery for back pain and one such is having a traumatic condition such as fracturing your spine as also dislocating it which can only be treated through performing surgery on it. If you have painful spondylolisthesis in which one vertebra slips forward under another one, you may also require going under the scalpel. And finally, if you have a neurologic deficit that is a result of a nerve compression or instability, you may need to undergo surgery for back pain.

Even in spite of these various conditions that may warrant having to undergo surgery for back pain; the good news is that there is only a one percent chance that you would ever need to go under the scalpel for your back pain condition. What will decide whether to have surgery or not is the severity of the pain and whether it is considerably hampering you from performing your day-to-day duties and whether the condition will deteriorate further if left untreated.

There are also many experts who are of the view that in the past too many surgeries for back pain had been performed and that these surgeries did not in fact help the patients and in some cases, even made the condition worse. They are more or less convinced that to really benefit from surgery for back pain, the doctor must select only the individuals that are most suited for such an operation and who would benefit the most from such surgery.

There are a few different types of surgery for back pain such as surgery for disc problems, surgery to stabilize the spine as well as surgery to create more space in the spine. Your doctor would be the best person to specify which the most suitable form of surgery would be for your case.
